JoyRon Foundation

Mallorcaresidencia is always keen on supporting the local community, and different causes moved by local foundations and NGO:s. One of those is Fundación JoyRon that helps children in need within the Balearic islands. They raise funds that are applied 100% to bring levels of support, joy and comfort to children in extreme circumstances.

The focus of the JoyRon Foundation is identifying and helping with the following problems:

– Children exposed to violence, exploitation, deprivation or abuse.

– Children suffering from hunger and living in Poverty.

– Children orphaned, fostered or in care.

– Seriously ill children.

Their longer-term objective and fund raising target is to work with relevant authorities to support the viability and development of a “Childrens’ Hospice” type facility in Mallorca for children with life threatening illness, which at the same time will improve the emotional and psychological support to the impacted family members.

The founder of the organization is Ronald Hawes, a retired banker originally from London. When we meet a warm morning in July he tells me that he himself didn’t have the best of childhoods, and when he moved to Mallorca it was clear to him he wanted to do something for the community. He had been the president for Calvià Lions for two years, when he decided to dedicate himself fulltime to the JoyRon Foundation and help children in need. Thereby, he set up the JoyRon Foundation together with his wife Josephine, hence the name JoyRon being Jo and Ron.

The foundation has only been active for 3 years but has already achieved several goals and helped many children on the island. One of the achievements is the financing of the construction of an Aquatic Centre at the ASPACE (the Balearic Cerebral Palsy Association) – school and day centre in Bunyola. The pool was formally opened in March 2017 and the foundation counted on the essential help from a renowned local architect who took on the project without any own profit. Watch a three-minute video about the project.

I like Ronald’s creative approach to get together people on the island, who, through their interests and professions, in different ways are willing to support the foundation and reach out to the children in need. A few times a year they hold business forums, where corporate entities or individuals can get together, network, socialise, share ideas, and many get involved in some aspect of the work of the foundation.

The JoyRon foundation also counts on a solid collaboration from different volunteers who offer their skills and time to the different projects. Earlier this year a “fun day” for children in a children’s home/protection centre was organized, and Ronald was there in person, together with 9 volunteers who provided entertainment such as face-painting, drawing, games, treasure hunt, bouncy castle and presents for the children, etc.

One of the current ongoing projects is the installation of a Childrens’ Cinema in the hospital Son Espases, for the children in palliative care, expected to be ready by the end of 2018.

The JoyRon foundation organizes several events throughout the year in order to raise money for their different projects. There are many ways to help, if you don’t have time for volunteering, an economic support is always welcome. As a small organization JoyRon can guarantee that admin costs are low and are privately funded, thereby 100% of the raised funds goes directly to support the different projects.

This is a list of upcoming events where you can get to know the foundation and their work and at the same time enjoy a social gathering and bring in support to the children in need on the Balearic Islands:

To add to the Fundacion JoyRon fund raising activities last year they produced an elaborate JoyRon 2018 Calendar “The Diversity of Mallorca” which many companies and individuals purchased for a donation to the foundation. They make ideal Christmas time gifts to friends, family and business associates. For 2019 JoyRon are producing a further calendar which will be printed by the end of September 2018 and available for a donation of euro 13.00 per calendar to support “Children in Need in the Baleares”. Mallorcaresidencia will purchase a few of those and we will be pleased to decorate our office with it and to share it with clients and friends.

Assaona: New Beach Club in Portixol, Palma

August’s restaurant-tip is the newly opened gastro beach club Assaona, at the end of Paseo Marítimo, just next to the charming Port of Portixol in Palma.

The word Assaona comes from the Catalan verb assaonar, which means to season. To season something is to make it just right, to allow it to mature, to add flavour using the specific required ingredients.

At Assaona you can delight in front of the sea enjoying the very best of the Mediterranean ingredients. The fresh meals are elaborated with the best local products from sea and land, and tradition and modern are fused in a unique taste experience. Who could resist to a sashimi, ceviche or a fish and sea food platter in front of the sea? Creative drinks and desserts, the breakfasts, and the special Children’s menu are also to be discovered.

This is an urban gastro club and one of the few beach clubs that will be open year around. The Assaona team, run by a Majorcan company, has chosen natural colors and noble materials to respect and resonate with the environment. This results in a stylish and Mediterranean design, which is as important as the determination for local and fresh products, all to offer a unique urban beach gastro experience in one of the most popular areas of Palma. A stroll along the beach of Can Pere Antoni is delightful at any time of the year, and with a destination like Assaona, the walk will be even more inspiring.

Portixol is reached by a short walk from Palma’s old town (along the Marítimo and the sea promenade) and this oasis in front of the sea may easily become a meeting point to enjoy beach life any season of the year.

Assaona opening hours: 09-01:00, kitchen opens: 12:30-22:30

Vintage Posters in New Shop in Palma

Recently we have decorated our office in Santa Catalina with a touch of nostalgic flair; two vintage posters from a very special shop in Palma. We definitely recommend a visit to this retro-shop in the old town where you can find exclusive travel posters and post cards from the Balearic Islands with the groovy colorful signature from the 60’s.

Founded in Galle Fort, Sri Lanka in 2011, Stick No Bills™ is the number one destination for vintage poster art and retro poster design celebrating the profound beauty, history and culture of Ceylon and Iberia.

Based between their Iberia flagship gallery in Palma De Mallorca and their Ceylon flagship gallery in Galle Fort, Stick No Bills digitally re-master, design, print, frame and ship limited edition travel posters and postcards using the world’s finest inks and paper.

A Tale of Two Islands

Two different islands, both with a remarkable beauty host this concept shop that cares for an ethical and solidary impress on each art piece.

Although founded 7 years ago in Sri Lanka, Stick No Bills founders Meg Gage Williams and Phillip Baber felt the calling to expand the business and move to the Mediterranean along with their young family, transporting the Stick No Bills concept from one richly historical island of profound beauty to another – Mallorca was the obvious choice.

Faith Anciano who runs the shop in Palma tells us how the project since it started believes in giving back. Proceeds from all sales here in Mallorca go to Medicos sin Fronteras. They are also founding members of Greener Galle and sponsors of the Sri Lankan Wildlife Conservation Society and the Galle Heritage Foundation. When you buy the posters you help fund these important eco, humanitarian, archaeological and conservational initiatives.

Stick No Bills™ is an ethical enterprise which upholds image authenticity, ownership and copyright as paramount, operating as we do in countries such as Sri Lanka, Spain and the United Kingdom which all remain committed signatories of the Berne Convention of 1886.

All Stick No Bills™ posters are exclusive copyright The Poster Design Group (UK) Limited. Each poster is therefore embossed with this London-based archives company’s seal of authenticity. This mark is a guarantee that the poster(s) you purchase are genuine Stick No Bills™ prints and that the true owners of copyright have been paid.

SUP Yoga in Mallorca

During the last years, the practice of Stand Up Paddle and also of SUP Yoga has become more and more popular on Mallorca. There are several different spots on the island where you have the possibility to rent a board to discover balance on your own in the water, or join a guided excursion, or why not, a SUP yoga class. In this article, we will shortly explain what SUP yoga is and where on the island you can have a try.

Originating from India, yoga is a tradition built up during many thousands of years, but didn’t gain strength in the Western world before the XX century. June 21 is International Yoga Day, a day of celebrating the union between all beings, recognising the benefits that the yoga practice provides, on both a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level; individually and universally.

SUP (Stand Up Paddle) started in Hawai in the forties, but, just like yoga, it has its roots thousands of years ago. In several cultures in the world, canoes or a stand up board have been used for transportation or hunting. In Hawai, surf, paddle surf and yoga were (and are) all very popular practices and people started to fuse SUP with yoga, creating a unique practice experimenting yoga postures on the board in the sea. Not so many years ago SUP yoga arrived to Europe, and here on Mallorca we are lucky to enjoy a good and stable climate throughout the year, which makes the SUP yoga season long and each year more and more practitioners are joining.

Where can you practice SUP yoga on Mallorca?

Below we list some of the places where you can experience a SUP yoga class on the island:

Soller SUP – Port de Soller

El Niño Surf center – Playa de Palma

La Mosca Cub de Surf – Palma de Mallorca

Be Happy Yoga Mallorca – Pollensa

What are the benefits?

The fusion between paddle board and yoga offers a unique practice with several benefits: balance, flexibility, alignment and strength, just to mention a few of them. You don’t at all have to be sporty or experienced in yoga to join; everyone can enjoy a class, where you are invited to practice mindfulness in different exercises and postures, standing, seated, on all fours or lying down. The human body is constituted of more than 70% water. Bringing awareness to that fact, and play with this special connection with the water, the flow, the movement, brings us to the reflection about what is moving in life and within each one of us.

What can you expect from a SUP yoga class?

To enjoy sea and nature, strengthen the core and your whole body, delight in moments of play and moments of relaxation. Let go and allow yourself to experience this special present moment with mindfulness, and discover your body and your balance in relationship with the water.
